The Shift_Up Part-Time Intensive Membership is designed for highly-motivated, self-directed learners determined to launch a career in web development.
The program offers an in-person learning community that meets 4x/week with curated pathways, group and 1:1 coaching, structure & accountability, and career services — at a fraction of the price of more traditional programs.
You're ambitious, resourceful, and smart, but navigating the glut of online resources is still a challenge. You don't want to waste your time. And you'd rather spend the time you have with a physical community of peers and coaches ready to support you.
That's why we provide Part-Time Intensive members with access to a deep bench of professional web developers. Our coaches are dedicated to helping guide you as you teach yourself web development from curated pathways available online. Our Part-Time Intensive Membership includes access to Shift_Up projects, skills maps, and assessments.
Shift_Up coaches are available on-call during all class hours. You will also be matched with a coach to build a 1:1 mentoring relationship through weekly check-ins and goal setting, personalized according to your individual needs and aspirations.
Part-Time Intensive members who pass our assessments will earn our certification and access our network of employers. While we don't (yet) guarantee interviews for graduates, we can guarantee that we'll open the door — so your application doesn't get lost in a black box.
The Shift_Up Part-Time Intensive Membership meets in person every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evening and Saturday all day (M/W/F 6-9pm; Saturday 9am-5pm), at the Durfee Innovation Society (2470 Collingwood Street, Detroit, MI 48206), near Detroit's Boston Edison neighborhood.
Most students will be ready for entry-level jobs in 6-9 months. Students progress at their own pace and therefore enjoy flexibility that can accomodate their goals and life demands. That said, duration in the program is capped at 12 months.
Classes blend individual, self-paced learning with time for projects and pair programming. Students also receive personal, professional, and leadership development during a specialized curriculum offered on Saturdays.
Shift_Up students are expected to code a minimum of 1 hour per day outside of class and are allowed up to two unexcused absences per month.
Our membership is $250/month — a fraction of the price of more traditional education programs that run $10-20,000.
Scholarships and financial aid are available. Inquire by emailing us via form on the bottom of this page.
Rolling admissions — apply and start anytime. See below for instructions on how to apply.
The Part-Time Intensive program is selective.
Teach yourself at least HTML & CSS. Then build a basic webpage and host it on GitHub Pages (yes, you will need to teach yourself how to use Git & Github). You may take as much time as you wish to build your skills at Code Nights, as a Standard Member, or on your own time to prepare your application. Your application webpage should answer the following questions:
What are you looking to get out of this program and why?
Why are you a good fit for this program?
When complete, email a link with your complete application to ray (at) shiftup.tech with the subject line "Shift_Up Intensive Program Application"
Attend an in-person or phone interview
Strong applicants will demonstrate:
Programming skill: Shift_Up is more self-directed than traditional training programs. We want to see that you have made the effort to teach yourself the fundamentals of programming and that you can apply them to solve problems & build working projects.
Mental tenacity: Some qualities associated with programming well include perseverance and determination, logic and problem-solving, and mathematical ability.
Ability to work together: Shift_Up is a co-learning program; you will help others and need help from others—often. We are looking for strong team players, or at least those with the capacity to become one.
